Profession of Faith Baptism

June 25th, 2023

In Genesis 17:7, God made a covenant with Abraham saying, “And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you.” This covenant of grace which God swore to Abraham is what Jesus Christ came to fulfill and extend to all the nations of the earth. As the Apostle Paul says in Galatians 4:7, “therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham,” and then a few verses later in Galatian 4:13-14, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”

Just as God gave to Abraham the covenant sign and seal of circumcision, so also God gave the Christian church the covenant sign and seal of baptism. Baptism is what unites to Jesus Christ, it is what sanctifies and seals us as belonging exclusively God. Baptism is our adoption into the family of God, and in it God declares the same thing that He swore to father Abraham many thousands of years ago, “I will be your God, and you will be my people.” This is God’s promise to all who are baptized.
